Ren Zhengfei, Huawei CEO claims that their mobile OS will be faster than operating systems developed by both Google and Apple.  However, he admitted that they will struggle as far as applications are concerned

We came to learn about the new OS, dubbed HongMeng OS after the trade war between the US and China escalated. Huawei has been working aggressively on its new OS which it hopes will be used on its phones if the US government does not lift the “Huawei Ban”.  This ban forbids US companies from engaging in business with the Chinese tech giant.  This means that Huawei will no longer have access to technology developed by US-based companies, including Google. Basically, Huawei phones will not have access to important Google services, such as the Google Play Store.

Struggle with Apps

It might be true that the HongMeng OS is faster than iOS and Android. But developing a store that can rival Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store is not something that is easy to achieve. Many have tried before and failed.  Windows tried and failed. Blackberry tried too and they suffered the same fate. Google and Apple stores are so big. It is virtually impossible to convince people who are used to the variety they find in the two biggest app stores to opt for a store with fewer, less developed apps.

We have witnessed a drop in Huawei phones prices since the Trump government announced the ban.  However, some retailers in Kenya have reported a steady increase in demand for smartphones from the China-based manufacturer after US president Donald Trump announced a potential ceasefire at a press conference in Japan.

There is a chance that Huawei might not rely on this OS on its future phones.  However, this does not mean that it will not be used at all.  We just have to wait and see.
